About Sugar City
A statutory town in Crowley County, on Colorado's high plains along State Highway 96.
Sugar City was founded in 1899 when the National Beet Sugar Company selected the site for a new sugar beet processing factory, completed in 1900 — the only independently owned sugar operation in the United States at the time. The town was officially incorporated in June 1900 and quickly became the fastest-growing community in the area. By the early 1900s, Sugar City was a bustling boom town with two hotels, five general stores, a race track, and its own newspaper, the Saccharine Gazette. The sugar beet factory closed in 1967, but the town's hardworking agricultural spirit endures today. The bells of St. Paul's Lutheran Church are still rung manually every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., a living connection to a simpler time.
